Queensland
Team returns
The
Boxing Queensland Team has now returned to Australia
tired but in good spirits. Congratulations to all its boxers who
acquitted themselves well both in and out of the ring. Its final
tournament was
against a high quality Welsh team all being British or Welsh champions.
BQI winners were Damien Hooper , Carlin Utia and Rohan Murdock with a
special mention going to Brent Rice who put up a great show
against the Commonwealth Youth Games silver medallist. Thank you to the
Welsh Institute of Sport which was
a kind and hospitable host to the BQI Team during its time in Wales.

Boxing Queensland Team
A
Boxing Queensland Team of 5 boxers competed in England in the first
week of December. A great result for Boxing Queensland with 3 boxers
winning their bouts - Damien Hooper, Carlin Utia and Michael Tapeau.
Unfortunately, Jesse Ross' opponent was withdrawn prior to the
competition due to an illness and Brent Rice's opponent did not make
weight. The Team are due to compete in another tournament in Wales
before returning home. Boxing Australia wishes them continued success.

2008 World Womens Championships - Ningbo, China
Team
Coach: Ruben Sanchez
Team Manager/Assistant Coach: Barry Fischer-Rasmussen
It is reasonable
to anticipate that the Chinese Boxing Federation will pull out
all the bells and whistles to
create a spectacular event to highlight the
International Amateur Boxing Association’s bid to have women’s boxing
included in the 2012 Olympics.
No doubt
travelling to and competing in Mexico and India against the Youth
champions from countries throughout the world has been a great
experience and will be of future benefit to all the boxers of the Teams
in their careers.
Special mention
should be made of Timacoy Williams (NSW) winning a bronze medal (54
kg.) in the World Youth Championships, and at the Commonwealth Youth
Games the winning by Ibrahim Balla (Vic) of a silver medal (57 kg.) and
of bronze medals by Jai Alexander (Vic) (60 kg.) and Jess Ross (Q’ld)
(69 kg.).
However, all
boxers are thanked for their good representation of Australia
in and out of the ring at both Championships.
Additionally,
congratulations to CYG Team Manager/Coach Mick Hastings (SA) and Coach
Allan Nicolson Jnr. (Q’ld), and World Youth Team Manager/Coach Don
Abnett (ACT/AIS) and, also, Coach Chris McCullen (Q’ld) who for family
reasons had to return early to Australia, for their leadership of the
Teams.
From their busy
records at the Championships it is obvious that David Pike (Vic) at the
CYG and Steve Donkin (NSW) at the Worlds were highly thought of by
their peers and represented our nation well in their referring and
judging.
Thank you to the
Indian CYG Organisers for meeting all costs associated with David
Pike’s officiating at the CYG.
And, thank you
to the Australian Commonwealth Games Association for meeting all costs
associated with the Australian Team’s participation in the CYG and for
the generous contribution to the cost of its participation at the World
Youth Championships.

The

AIBA
advises that Russia is the only country to have a competitor in each of
the 11 weight categories, whilst Morocco, Cuba, China and Kazakhstan
all qualified 10 boxers and the USA, France

GOLD, SILVER, BRONZE AT
OCEANIA
CHAMPIONSHIPS
What a great Tournament
for Australian boxing!
Congratulations to the
Australian Boxing Team and its coaches and support members for the
Team’s great performance inside and outside the ring at the 2008
Oceania Championships doubling as Oceania’s
Olympic Qualifying Tournament. Thank you, also, to all the Australian
Team supporters who made the trip to Apia,
Samoa.
Nine Australian boxers
won Gold and selection to the Beijing Olympics (subject to confirmation
by the AOC), 4 Australians won Silver and 5 won Bronze. Of the 12
Australians who suffered a defeat at the Tournament, 8 were defeated by
other Australians. In addition to the 9 Olympic qualifiers, what was
particularly encouraging for the future of Australian boxing was the
talent displayed and good performances by all the young Australian
boxer members of the Team.
Special congratulations
to our Olympic qualifiers and our good wishes for their success at the
Olympic Games: Stephen Sutherland (Flyweight), Luke Boyd
(Bantamweight), Paul Fleming (Featherweight), Anthony Little
(Lightweight), Todd Kidd (Light-Welterweight), Gerard O’Mahony
(Welterweight), Jarrod Fletcher (Middleweight), Brad Pitt (Heavyweight)
and Daniel Beahan (Super Heavyweight).
Thank you to Team
Manager Phillip Goodes, Head Coach Bodo
Andreass, Coaches Mark Wilson, Chris McCullen, Geoff Peterson and Erle
Wiltshire, and Support
Members Vince Consentini, Hamilton Lee and Cathy La Rosa for their work
in leadership, training and support of the Team.
Special acknowledgement
should be made of the tremendous support of the Team by the Australian
Sports Commission and the Australian Institute of Sport. Additionally,
BAI wishes to acknowledge the help to BAI of the Australian Olympic
Committee in the lead-up to the Tournament.
Thank you, also, to the
Samoan Amateur Boxing Association and, in particular, its President

Nomination
Criteria and Selection By-law amendments
BAI
and the AOC have agreed and approved amendment of the 2008 Australian
Olympic team Boxing Nomination Criteria. A copy of the amended
Nomination Criteria can be found in the Documents section of this
website. The amended Nomination Criteria rectifies an unintended
shortcoming in the original Nomination Criteria and enables BAI to
nominate to the AOC for selection to the Australian Olympic
Team any boxer from the 'B' team who becomes a
2008 Oceania champion. The amended Nomination Criteria gives
effect to BAI's and the AOC's original intentions that Australia could,
and subsequently would, have 'A' and 'B' teams compete in the 2008
Oceania Championships.
Additionally, the AOC has advised BAI of amendment to its Olympic Team
Selection By-law relating to reimbursement by athletes of incurred CAS
costs and expenses. The amended By-law is available on the AOC website www.olympics.com.au (under the AOC/Reports &
Policies/Constitutions, By-Laws, Charters & Addition).

CAS decision in BAI’s favour
Boxing Australia's
appeal against AIBA's decision to limit Australia and other
Oceania nations to only one boxer per weight division at the
forthcoming Oceania Championships was heard by the Court of Arbitration
for Sport in Lausanne,
Switzerland
on 17 March 2008.
AIBA was ordered
by the Court to use the 2008 Oceania Continental Championships as the
2008 Olympic Qualifying tournament for Oceania, to allow each member of
the Oceania Boxing Association to enter 2 boxers in each weight
category at the championships, and to bear the costs of the Court’s
arbitration.
In consequence,
there will be no need in the circumstances for any "box-off" between
our "A" and "B" teams. The way is
now clear for both teams to compete at the Oceania
Championships.
