Australian
World Championship Team News
The Australian Boxing Team for the 2007 World
Championships commencing on 23 October in Chicago,
USA,
has now moved from a high altitude training camp in Colorado, USA, to Marquette,
Michigan,
to finish its preparation for what is the first major qualifying
tournament for the Beijing Olympics. The first eight boxers at the
World Championships in the weight divisions 48 kg to 81 kg and the
first four boxers in the 91 kg-91 + kg divisions qualify to compete in
the 2008 Olympic Games.
Any
Australian boxers that do not qualify for the 2008 Olympics at the
World Championships will need to represent Australia at the 2008
Oceania Olympic Qualifying Tournament and, if no Oceania ‘continent’
boxer through the World Championships has already taken up the Oceania
continent’s quota of one boxer per weight division for the Olympic
Games, then qualify through becoming an Oceania senior mens champion.
Brad
Pitt in the 91 kg division has been confirmed by Boxing Australia’s
Board of Directors as a member of the Australian Boxing Team for the
World Championships. Brad recently returned to Australia
to receive advice regarding a hand injury, and the Board has taken its
decision that he retain his position in the Australian Team after
receiving an opinion from an eminent medical specialist that Brad will
be able to undertake full boxing activity at the World Championships.
Boxing Australia
wishes the Team all the best in its final stages of preparation for the
World Championships.
